Stop Wasting Money Heating the Air in Your Fruit Plant
Let’s be honest: margins in fruit and veg processing are brutal. I see it all the time. Plants running these massive convection ovens that basically turn the entire factory into a sauna. You’re paying a fortune to heat the room, but the fruit? That’s a different story. Switching to infrared (IR) tunnel dryers just makes more sense. Instead of fighting with the air, IR lamps send energy straight into the moisture inside the fruit. It’s direct. It’s efficient. Getting the heat right If you want to actually see a return on this, you can’t just guess. You’ve got to pick your lamps based on how juicy the fruit is. Shortwave IR is the way to go if you need to get deep into the pulp and move that water out fast. We usually stick with high-wattage quartz tubes. Why? Because they let you keep the equipment compact. You can actually shorten your tunnel without slowing down your production. But here’s the trick: it’s a balancing act. If your belt is crawling and you’ve got the heat cranked, you’ll scorch the skin. But if the belt is flying, you’ll end up with a product that’s dry on the outside and soggy in the middle. You have to find that sweet spot. Built for the mess Fruit factories are tough places. They’re humid, they’re sticky, and things tend to corrode. We don’t build these things to look pretty in a brochure; we build them to take a beating. We use quartz glass and specific coatings so the lamps don’t just burn out the moment things get humid. And we use standard connectors. I’ve been there—you can’t have your entire line dead for four hours just because one tube popped. You need to be able to swap it out and get moving again in minutes. The catch Now, it’s not all magic. High-density IR heating pulls a lot of power. If you’re dropping in a bank of 2kW lamps, check your electrical panel. Make sure your wiring and breakers can actually handle that peak draw, or you’re going to have a bad day. Also, watch your airflow. If the tunnel isn’t vented properly, the heat just sits there. That ambient heat will eat through your conveyor belts. Trust me, you don’t want to be replacing those belts every six months. Get the air moving, and you’ll be fine.
