
How to actually pick an infrared heater for your bathroom
Most people just look for an IPX5 rating and call it a day. Sure, that seal keeps the unit from dying the first time it gets splashed, but it doesn’t tell you if you’re actually going to be warm—or if you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill. The real trick is matching the wattage to the actual size of your room.
Getting the power right
I see this all the time: someone over-specs the wattage, thinking “more is better.” It’s not. If you put a massive heater in a tiny powder room (anything under 4m²), you’re just wasting energy and wearing out the bulb faster. A 250W to 400W shortwave lamp is usually plenty to get that instant “toastiness” we all want. If you’ve got a larger master bath—maybe 8m² to 12m²—you obviously need more punch. You could go with one big 800W lamp, but here’s a better way:split the load. Put in two smaller lamps instead. It feels way more natural. You won’t end up with those annoying “hot spots” where your shoulders are scorching but your toes are still freezing.
The catch with waterproof seals
Here is the thing about those IPX5 housings. Because they’re sealed tight to keep water out, they don’t breathe very well. This means the heat gets trapped around the base, and the lamp runs hotter than it would in a ventilated fixture. This is why the reflectors matter. You want polished aluminum or gold-coated surfaces. Why? Because they push the heat out toward you. If the reflector is dull or cheap, that heat bounces right back into the socket. It basically cooks your wiring and kills the lamp’s lifespan.
A few things to check before you install
Before you flip the switch, look up. If your ceilings are higher than 2.5 meters, a 400W lamp is going to feel weak by the time the heat reaches the floor. You’ll probably need to jump up a wattage tier just to feel that same warmth on your skin. Just a heads-up: more wattage means a heavier pull on your circuit breaker. Make sure your wiring can actually handle the peak load before you go too big. You don’t want to be standing in a cold shower because you tripped the power.
