
Picking the Right Infrared Lamp for Your Bathroom
Let’s be honest: nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing cold bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. The trick to fixing this is using short-wave infrared lamps. Instead of trying to heat up all the air in the room—which takes forever and wastes a ton of electricity—these lamps beam heat directly onto you and the surfaces around you. It’s that instant, cozy warmth that makes a huge difference. But you can’t just grab any lamp. You’ve got to match the wattage to the size of your space.
Getting the Power Right
If you’re just dealing with a tiny powder room, keep it simple. A single 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty to create a nice, warm zone. If you go overboard with the wattage in a small room, you’re asking for trouble—either you’ll trip a breaker or you’ll end up with “hot spots” that feel way too intense. For those big master baths, you’ll want a different approach. I usually suggest a few lamps spread out. Maybe two 600W units spaced apart? This spreads the heat around so you don’t feel like you’re standing under a heat gun, but the whole area still feels temperate and inviting.
Don’t Ignore the IP65 Rating
Bathrooms are basically steam rooms. Between the shower spray and the humidity, water gets everywhere. That’s why you need housings rated IP65. It’s just a fancy way of saying the unit is sealed tight. Without that seal, steam creeps into the electrical terminals, things start to corrode, and your lamp will probably burn out in a couple of seasons. It’s a small detail that saves you from a huge headache later.
Speed vs. The Electric Bill
Here’s the trade-off: more wattage means the heat hits you faster. A 1000W lamp is almost instant. But there’s a catch. That initial “kick” draws a lot of current. If you’re putting these into an older home with aging wires, be careful. You might want to stick with lower wattage lamps or split the load across a few different circuits. You don’t want your lights flickering every time you turn on the heat.
