
Fixing Those Annoying Cold Spots in Glass Annealing
If you’ve spent any time with annealing kilns, you know the frustration of “dead zones.” You’re heating up a piece with a tricky shape, and suddenly you find these stubborn cold spots where the IR lamps just aren’t hitting. It’s a headache. We found a way around this. Instead of sticking with the usual setup, we started using ceramic end caps in the lamp assembly. It sounds like a small tweak, but it lets us crowd the lamps closer together, which means the heat actually wraps around those irregular curves instead of leaving gaps. Why ceramic? Most setups use quartz ends. They’re fragile. You have to be careful where you mount them, which usually means leaving too much space between the lamps or the kiln wall. We switched to high-alumina ceramic. It’s tough. It handles the heat and the physical stress without flinching. Because they’re so sturdy, you can pack the lamps in tight. Those edge-of-the-zone cold spots? They basically disappear. Handling the heat To get a complex vessel to heat evenly, you need a lot of power in a small space. We use high-wattage filaments so the radiation actually sinks into the glass wall. But here’s the catch: when you cram that much power into a tight footprint, your wiring takes a hit. Just a heads-up—make sure your electrical leads can handle the peak current. You don’t want your terminals burning out right in the middle of a run. Getting it installed The best part is that these are drop-in replacements. You don’t have to rebuild your whole array. The ceramic caps also act as a shield, protecting the filament from oxidation or a clumsy bump during installation. Since the lamps sit closer to the glass, the heat hits much harder. But it does change the beam angle—it’s narrower. You’ll want to spend a little time mapping out exactly where the lamps sit. You’ve got to aim them right at the shoulders and necks of your glassware. If you’re too close, you’ll overheat the surface. Too far, and those dead zones come crawling back. Find that sweet spot, and your entire batch stays consistent. No more guessing.
